Maelstrom and Bird Safari

Maelstrom and Bird Safari

An Incredible Nature Experience with RIB Through the Maelstrom

Join a fantastic nature experience through one of the world’s strongest maelstroms. In a seaworthy speedboat with all the necessary safety equipment, we’ll take you on a safe adventure trip along the dramatic mountain range known as Lofotveggen, past abandoned fishing villages, and onward to colonies of sea otters and cormorant birds. After observing these beautiful birds for a while, we’ll cross the maelstrom again before heading back to Reine.

Guided Tour

The boat driver will meet you at our office where life jackets and rescue equipment will be distributed. Our boat drivers have all the necessary certifications and are well acquainted with the sea and conditions around Lofoten. They also have excellent local knowledge, so they also serve as great guides during the trip. The boats are equipped with rescue equipment according to current regulations.

Abandoned Fishing Villages

When everyone is on board and the safety instructions have been given, the boat will set off towards Lofotodden National Park. We’ll stay close to land and take our time during the boat trip so you can see all the amazing things Lofoten has to offer. At the foot of the towering mountains, you’ll see remnants of small, abandoned “fiskevær” – traditional Norwegian fishing villages. Today, foundation walls and stone fences are the only remaining evidence of the hundreds of people that once lived there.

The Maelstrom

As we continue on our trip, we’ll navigate past places where we have seen the majestic sea eagle over the years, and we’ll travel out into the infamous maelstrom, one of the world’s strongest tidal currents. Here, you will see the incredible force of the sea. In the midst of the maelstrom, we’ll find islets and skerries, where cormorants, ospreys, and other birds nest. Puffins, auks, eiders and eagles have often been spotted in the area. After observing these beautiful birds for a while, we’ll cross the maelstrom again and head back to Reine.
